“But They Look Fine!” Seeing the Invisible Work of Invisible Disabilities

Session Description

Your student is brilliant, but…

  • She hides under the table and runs from the classroom
  • He never turns in his work
  • Her reactions to correction are disproportionate and loud
  • He’s outright defiant in the classroom
  • She fixates on your absence and wants constant reassurance

As a mom on the receiving end of conversations that began this way, author, educator, and neurodivergent parent coach Ginny Kochis invites us to look beyond what we see and reconsider what we assume. She will explore what happens when we assume that because a child is bright, verbal, or seemingly typical, they should meet the same expectations as their peers. By learning to look beyond behavior and recognize the invisible needs beneath it, we can replace judgment with understanding and create school communities where every child succeeds, and every family belongs.
