Teaching executive functioning strategies to secondary students with disabilities is essential for their success in school and beyond. Executive functioning encompasses a set of cognitive processes that help students to navigate challenges, manage responsibilities, and accomplish their goals. In this session, participants will explore practical approaches to identify students’ executive functioning strengths and areas for growth. Research-based executive functioning strategies will be presented and an approach for teaching them will be illustrated. Key focus areas that will be highlighted include planning, organization, time management, working memory, metacognition, sustained attention, and task initiation. This session will provide actionable strategies, real-world examples, and instructional techniques designed to empower educators to support their students in mastering these critical skills, fostering independence and long-term success.
